Picture choosen by: Ms.anonymoustraveller Taiwan Overview Ilha Formosa – Beautiful Island. This is what a group of Portuguese sailors uttered upon seeing Taiwan for the first time. This sweet-potato-shaped island situated in East Asia in the Western Pacific Ocean and located off the southeastern coast of China's mainland.
In 1895, Japan acquired Taiwan from the Qing Empire. Not untill the end of World War II, China didn't regain the sovereignty of Taiwan. Four years later, the Republic of China lost mainland in the Chinese Civil War to Communists and retreated to Taiwan. Thus, the political status of Taiwan is disputed because People's Republic of China considers itself to be the successor state to the ROC, while Taiwan denies it.
Despite all these, Taiwan rapidly developped its economy. Its technology industry plays a key role in the global economy. And its companies manufacture a large portion of the world'd consumer electronics, although most of them are now made in their factotries in China's mainland.
Though Taiwan hasn't yet made it to the top of everyone's “must-visit” list, it may be particially a result of people not quite knowing what Taiwan has to offer. With the exuberant mountain of Wulai, dazzling cities like Taipei, the amazzing basalt cliffs of penghu, excellent hiking in Taroko Gorge, and the world's best hot springs, Taiwan cuts a figue as one of the most diverse destinations in Asia.
